Online Poker Terminology - The History of Online Poker
In two weeks the World Series of Poker (WSOP) will start in the capital of gambling, Las Vegas. Many people worldwide gamble online on who is going to win, and also play online poker themselves. But what do we really know about this popular game? Let's try to remind ourselves where poker comes from.
The name poker is probably originated in the French word "poque", which descended from the German "pochen" ("to knock"; also means "to brag" in Dutch). However, we do not know for sure whether the origins of poker itself lie with these games. Poker resembles the Persian game called "as nas". It is possible that Persian sailors taught the French settlers in New Orleans the game of poker. It also may share its roots with the Renaissance game of primero and the French "brelan".
In the 19th century, during the gold rush, the poker game was spread from New Orleans (where it was originally used with 20 cards) up the Mississippi and West. Soon after the spread, the full 52-card English deck was used. Many changes have been made since then, and the game of poker became an inseparable part of American culture. It even has its own jargon, many words from which had entered the everyday life. And lately, with the growing popularity of the World Wide Web, grows the popularity of the online poker, which can be sometimes even better than the real thing.
