Online Poker Terminology - Poker world has new champ and ambassador
Australian Joe Hachem has won the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, clinching $7.5 million in winnings to become poker’s newest world champion and "ambassador". The final poker match of the Series, which started last Friday night (July 15) ended the next morning as being the longest final table in tournament history, and for the richest prize no less. Out of 5,619 players that had begun the 36th year of the poker tournament, nine reached the final table. Two remained Saturday morning, Joe Hachem and American Steven Dannenmann. Amazingly, this World Series of Poker was the first such poker championship for both players. All of poker’s traditionally accepted best players were out of the running long before the final game, where the poker prize money was on display for all to see: in $50,000 bundles, made up of $100 bills.
Joe Hachem may be an Australian now, but he is Lebanese by birth. Following his victory, where he said that the $7,500,000 will change everything about his life, the thirty-nine year old had choice words for the country in which his poker winnings were won: "Thank you America!" Hachem’s family moved to Australia from Lebanon in 1972. Before becoming Poker Champion of the World, he was worked as a chiropractor for 13 years before deciding to become a professional poker player just three years ago.
Following his victory, he called his wife in Melbourne, who reportedly fainted after hearing the news. He says that the poker prize money is second to the prestige of the poker championship title, namely the bracelet: "The money's great. I'd be lying if I said it's not. But the bracelet is the thing. It's an honor and a privilege to wear it." Last year’s winner in the World Series of Poker was poker great Greg Raymer.
