Online Poker Terminology - Poker champ Orient Express continues to chug to success
Poker pro Johnny Chan has come a long way since his birth in Canton, China, 48 years ago. Having grown up loving poker, Chan has honed his poker skills over his lifetime spent playing poker and living in places as diverse as Hong Kong, Phoenix, Houston and of course Las Vegas.
No other poker player at this year’s World Series of Poker holds as many of the poker event’s bracelets as Chan. He was even elected to the Poker Hall of Fame in 2002 and appeared with Matt Damon in the movie “Rounders”, where he was referred to by poker players in that movie as the “world’s best poker player.”
Chan won the America’s Cup Poker Championship in 1982 at Bob Stupak’s Vegas World Casino, and it was Mr. Stupak himself who saw Johnny’s poker potential and labeled him “The Orient Express”. He was listed as an 80-1 shot at the World Series of Poker held in 1983. He won his first World Series of Poker bracelet two years later, and four years later won the Diamond Jim Brady Main Event Poker Championship at the same poker tournament.
While Chan played poker part time as a hobby and focused on studying hotel and restaurant management in college, his passion after college was always for poker and he went against his father’s wishes when he chose make poker his life and move from Houston to Vegas to pursue his dream of being a poker champion. A week after moving to Las Vegas with a poker bankroll of just $120, he was broke because of poker losses and working for a casino instead of playing poker professionally in one.
It was in 1987 at the World Series of Poker when Chan’s train finally came in, and he walked away from the championship poker game that year having won $655,000.
There is little doubt that Chan is going to continue his quest to remain the world’s best poker player. Even as he and his wife have six children, he remains committed to poker and has recently written a book about the game of poker. Has used his poker winnings over the years to put his university degree to good use, and owns a restaurant in Las Vegas’ Stratosphere Hotel and Casino.
