Online Poker Terminology - Online Casino Opponents - a Hidden Agenda
The main concerns of opponents to the online casino industry are under age gambling and money laundering. They lobby for certain gambling activities to be outlawed and push for bills to limit the business of online casino sites. They call for bills, sign petitions and try to broker deals, but what is an astonishing and often overlooked fact is that online casino companies already have the technology to prevent under aged and problematic gamblers from playing on their site and combat money laundering. Just like the cigarettes and alcohol industries, governments have the means to regulate the online casino industry and to deal with the problems they are concerned about effectively.
But surprisingly, instead of pushing for age checks and tighter regulation to fight the development they so strongly oppose, the picture seems to be one of more or less arbitrary banning of some gambling activities and licensing of others. Could it be that there is a hidden agenda behind this behavior, quite apart from the apparent concern for society? Some experts of the online casino industry think so. The seemingly inconsistent pattern seems to follow a certain guideline: Protecting homegrown online casino sites from foreign competition.
This is why in the USA, the ban proposed in the Bill H.R.4411 says nothing about a minimum age requirement, but asks to ban only the online gaming activities which America does not mostly control. It is no secret that online casinos are a profitable and rapidly growing industry, creating revenue and jobs that are beneficial for any economy. It is understandable that countries try and shield their revenue against foreign competitors. But with the internet being a global reality, legislators will have to think about real solutions for online casino companies that acknowledge this reality whilst protecting more vulnerable members of society.
