Online Poker Terminology - Online Casino Gambling Alive and Kicking in South Africa
With the focus of the world naturally on the online casino industry in the United States, it may be easy to overlook the fact that online casino gambling is alive and kicking in other parts of the world. Take the example of South Africa, for example. Although online casino gambling is officially banned in the country, a nine-man board has been working for eighteen months to make recommendations to the government to regulate the industry.
The local South African media has been making comparisons between the online casino industries of the United Kingdom and the United States, showing the rigid, prohibition attitude of the latter compared to the more enlightened path of the English. The local government seems to favor regulation over prohibition and the South African Department of Trade and Industry has already drafted an amendment bill that would essentially allow online casino sites to be licensed in the country. Legalizing online gambling will also provide much-needed extra revenue for a country riddled with AIDS and other social problems. Already, brick and mortar casinos are taxed high amounts.
Despite the law, online casino sites are not exactly hiding their wares. South African online casino sites spend millions of years annually on advertising, despite the fact that the local industry is relatively small. Although gamblers are essentially breaking the law by gambling online, none have ever been arrested by South African authorities.
